What to Pack for a Reading Retreat

Packing for a reading retreat? Here’s your official permission slip to skip the “just in case I need to work” outfit and bring your fluffiest socks instead.

Whether you're joining one of my Busy With Books reading retreats or planning your own DIY version, this guide has you covered with all the essentials.

The Reading Retreat Packing List

Let’s keep it simple, intentional, and cosy.

1. Books (yes, plural)

Bring at least two or three — trust me. You might fly through one in a single afternoon, or bounce between genres depending on your mood.

Consider packing:

  • One book you’re halfway through (for momentum)

  • One easy page-turner

  • One wildcard — maybe a short story collection or something you’ve been meaning to read forever

If you’re bringing your e-reader, don’t forget to bring your charger too! You don’t want your battery to run out halfway through a book…

2. Comfy clothes

You want soft, loose, warm layers: loungewear that still makes you feel slightly put together for group dinner (if you’re retreating with others).

Must-haves:

  • Cosy jumper or hoodie

  • Warm socks or slippers

  • Pyjamas you wouldn’t mind being seen in

3. Notebook or journal

You don’t have to journal, but sometimes reading unlocks thoughts you want to capture. Plus, there’s something satisfying about noting down standout quotes or how a book made you feel.

(And if you do feel like reflecting? It’s nice to have something that’s not your Notes app.)

4. Snacks + your favourite drink

If you’re going on a hosted retreat, a lot of this will be provided but it never hurts to have a stash of your favourites.

Some favourites:

  • Chocolate, biscuits, fruit, nuts (basically: one-handed snacks)

  • Your favourite tea, coffee, or something sparkly

  • A water bottle to stay hydrated

Yummy food

5. Optional extras for ultimate retreat vibes

  • A bookmark you love

  • A reading light

  • Annotation stickers & your favourite pen

  • A colouring book & coloured pencils as an alternative activity if you need a break from reading

  • A face mask or something pamper-y

What not to pack:

You do not need:

  • Your laptop (unless you're using it to read or listen to audiobooks)

  • Work tasks

  • Anything that makes you feel like you need to be “productive”

This is a retreat. Rest is productive. Let yourself unplug.

Bonus tip: leave space in your bag

You never know what book you’ll pick up during the retreat - at BWB reading retreats, we have our own little book fair and guests usually leave with more books than they came with.
